Sea salt, coarse salt, mineral and bath salts…the word “salt” is widely used today. Yet it does not always designate the same product.
In everyday usage, salt is above all a reference to dietary salt. It consists of sodium chloride, a crystal composed of sodium ions Na+ and chloride Cl-. It also contains weak proportions of other elements such as clay, coal, sulfates or mineral salts (magnesium, calcium, iron…). These are the elements which give salt its colour: grey, pinkish, blue, red, yellow or even black. Widely differing varieties of salt exist around the world.
