Origins

A long pipeline was built to connect Salins-les-Bains to Arc-et-Senans. This undertaking, called a « saumoduc » or « brine pipeline », was intended to provide salt water to the Royal Saltworks.  The saltworks did not, in fact, dispose of its own saltwater springs and was thus obliged to import its natural resource from Salins-les-Bains.

The brine pipeline was a grand project and a veritable technical challenge. The great distance, the low geographical relief, the necessity to cross both river and road…these were the obstacles to overcome.
